The world champion from Norway stepped up his game as he finished the round with two commanding victories to defeat Giri 3-1. It was a bad omen for the remainder of the field. Carlsen will now face American Hans Niemann in Round 2, who had a drama-filled day and lost 0-3. Niemann had a disastrous start against the champion of the Oslo Esports Cup from Poland, Jan-Krzysztof Duda.
Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, a 17-year-old hotshot from India, won the first game of the battle of the prodigies by taking advantage of a small error made by Alireza Firouzja. Firouzja immediately responded in the second to even the score before significantly increasing his lead in the third. Pragg appeared to be out of it in game 3 but miraculously recovered to win a second game to go up 2-1.
