With the victory, Malaysia reclaimed the gold medalย they had lost to India on Gold Coast four years prior.
The Malaysians battled valiantly and prevailed 21-18, 21-15 to give their side a 1-0 lead. In the women’s singles, world number seven and two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu was anticipated to win easily, but Goh Jin Wei, who was ranked 60th, made it very difficult for her.
In the opening game, Sindhu had an 11-6 advantage, but Goh appeared to have changed after the break.
