2022 Commonwealth Games – Men’s Hockey Teams, Groups, India vs England Results, Upcoming Schedule, Date, Time, And Venue
Against England, the Indian hockey team got off to a fast start. In the second minute, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay successfully intercepted a long ball from Harmanpreet Singh and assisted India in earning a penalty corner through deft play inside the D. The English goalie stopped Harmanpreet Singh’s drag-flick at the low right corner of the goal, but Lalit Kumar Upadhyay made sure the opportunity did not go to waste by scoring on the rebound.
England had a majority of the ball, but India, with better positioning and forward intent, doubled their advantage in the 13th minute thanks to Mandeep Singh’s potent tomahawk shot to the right of the goalie. Varun Kumar was given a five-minute suspension to start the second quarter, but India did not back down, and Mandeep Singh’s shot in the 22nd minute, deflected by an England defender, increased India’s lead to three goals.
Liam Ansell’s rocket from the right edge of the circle in the 42nd minute gave England the advantage after the teams switched ends. However, India regained a three-goal advantage in the 46th minute after Harmanpreet Singh successfully converted a penalty corner. In the very next minute, Nicholas Bandurak scored England’s second goal after receiving a vertical ball from captain Jack Waller.
Three minutes later, Phil Roper of England beat Indian goalkeeper Krishan Bahadur Pathak to score England’s third goal from the right and into the left corner of the net. England launched a full-court press when India was down to nine men, and Nicholas Bandurak made no mistakes in directing a stunning England comeback in the 53rd minute.
India’s next two matches are against lower-ranked Canada and Wales on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, which they will try to win by a bigger margin to secure first position in the group.
