Ajay Singh, an Indian weightlifter, put in a valiant effort to win another gold for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, but he heartbreakingly fell one kilogram short of a podium finish and finished fourth in the men’s 81kg category on Monday.

Ajay had perfected each of his lifts in the competition at the nail-biting final at the National Exhibition Centre. He finished with a total of 319 kg (146 kg in snatch and 176 kg in clean & jerk), just missing out on a medal. However, he was unable to lift 180 kg in his last clean and jerk effort.

Who Is Ajay Singh?

Ajay Singh is an Indian weightlifter who is known for competing in the 81 kg weight class. He is recently been in the news because he is unable to earn the 7th medal for India at the 2022 Commonwealth Games which were going on in Birmingham, UK.

His full name is Ajay Singh Shekhawat. He was born on 17 April 1997 in Rajasthan, India. Presently, he is 25 years old and his height stands at 5 feet 9 inches.

His mother is a housewife and his father is an ex-military officer. He also has a younger sister and a brother. At the moment, Ajay works for the Army and attends training at the Army Sports Institute in Pune, Maharashtra.

His Career

Ajay Singh has always been passionate about athletics; before taking up weightlifting, he experimented with the 20-kilometre race running. However, his trainers believed that his skill was better suited for weightlifting and advised him to pursue the sport professionally.

Ajay won the bronze medal in the 2017 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Kathmandu, Nepal, in addition to the gold at the Commonwealth Games.

He has won two gold medals in the Commonwealth Championships. In addition to lifting a total of 322 kg in 2021 Tashkent, Singh also established a 146 kg Snatch round national record.
