Know more about how unfortunate injury cost Sanket Sagar the gold medal at Commonwealth Games
Sanket Mahadev Sagar’s Silver Medal Performance in Weightlifting of 2022 Commonwealth Games
At the National Exhibition Centre in Solihull on Saturday, weightlifter Sanket Mahadev Sargar earned a silver medal in the men’s 55kg division, earning India its first medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Sanket Sargar, a farmer’s son from Sangli in Maharashtra, finished second in his division at Birmingham 2022 with a total lift of 248 kg (snatch: 113 kg; clean and jerk: 135 kg). Dramatically, Malaysia’s Mohamad Aniq bin Kasdan (249 kg) took home the gold, while Sri Lanka’s Dilanka Isuru Kumara (225 kg) was content with the bronze.
The 21-year-old Sanket started his campaign with a successful 107kg attempt in snatch before managing 111kg in his second attempt. In February, during the Singapore Weightlifting International, he broke the national and Commonwealth records with a 256kg lift. With his third and last lift, Sanket Sargar recorded 113 kg, tying both his personal best and the snatch national record for India. The next two best lifts in snatch were recorded by Mohamad Aniq bin Kasdan (107 kg) and Sri Lankan lifter Dilanka Isuru Kumara (105 kg).
How Sanket Sagar’s injury cost him Gold Medal?
With a difference of just 1 kg, India lost the gold medal in the 55 kg weightlifting. Sanket Mahadev Sargar, who won silver in the finals after sweeping the “Snatch” round, was unable to win gold because of an injury he suffered during his second attempt in the clean-and-jerk round. Sanket’s face also showed the anguish that his right arm experienced during the performance.
Sanket Sargar entered the clean and jerk round of the competition in first place among the 11-man field and lifted 135 kg on his first try, therefore securing a podium finish for himself. Later, Sanket Sargar mishandled his attempt at 139 kg by awkwardly twisting his elbow. Despite the setback, he made a valiant third try at the same weight despite the injuries, but he dropped the bar while performing the jerk and appeared to be in anguish.
