If Pang wanted to go to the third stage on Friday, he had to overcome the difficult obstacle of Ronnie O’Sullivan, Ali Carter, and Yuan Sijun. Yuan started the day off with a dominant performance that comprised scores of 74, 40, and 64 to defeat reigning world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan 3-0 and secure the three points. Yuan quickly destroyed Carter’s chances of moving on following a tie in which the Captain did gain a 2-1 advantage. After 40 minutes of play, the final frame was gritty, but Yuan edged it to win.
O’Sullivan knew he had to move in his second match of the day with Pang in his way as the evening session got underway. Pang appeared to be in complete control after winning the first round with a 147 attempt that missed at 104 to take a 2-0 lead. O’Sullivan did recover with a break of 74, but Pang’s subsequent effort to hit the maximum score ended at 73.
In his final contest against Yuan, who required all three points to advance, Pang knew a draw would be sufficient to top the group. Yuan made 57 in the first to take the lead, but Pang rallied to tie the score at one. Pang advanced to the next round after winning the third frame but with Yuan’s final contribution of 73, they were able to split the rewards in the match.
Group G matches featuring Shaun Murphy, Ricky Walden, Anthony Hamilton, and Elliot Slessor will be at Table 1 tomorrow in a live broadcast on FreeSports, DAZN, Viaplay, and Matchroom. Meanwhile, Group B matches featuring Luca Brecel, Chris Wakelin, Jamie Clarke, and Daniel Wells, will be streamed live on YouTube.
