Prediction
Nick Kyrgios and Peter Gojowczyk are set to meet for the very first time in their ATP career tomorrow.
Since finishing as the runner-up at Wimbledon a few weeks ago, Kyrgios has not played in competition again. At the All England Club, he was defeated in four sets by Novak Djokovic. This year, he has also done pretty well outside of grass-based competitions. Although the 27-year-old lost his singles match at the Australian Open a little too early, he and Thanasi Kokkinakis won the doubles match.
Then, Kyrgios advanced to the Indian Wells Open quarterfinals before falling to Rafael Nadal. He then competed in the Miami Open’s fourth round, when he was eliminated by Jannik Sinner. The Australian has a good record on hard courts, and after just making it to his first Grand Slam singles final, he’ll be feeling pretty good about himself.
Meanwhile, on the other hand, Gojowczyk has had a difficult year thus far, winning just a few matches in the main draw. He overcame Brandon Nakashima to proceed to the second round of the Mexican Open, where he beat Alexander Zverev in a walkover to reach the quarterfinals. Then he was defeated by Cameron Norrie.
In the Newport Open’s opening round last week, Gojowczyk defeated Ugo Humbert to earn his second victory of the year. In the second round, he was defeated by John Isner. To enter the Atlanta Open main draw, the German had to compete in qualification.
Kyrgios won the Atlanta Open in 2016, making him a previous winner of the event. Given his recent performance, he’ll aim to win here again.
Given their respective recent performances, Kyrgios will be the clear favourite to win this match. Gojowczyk’s 2-10 overall record for the season hasn’t given him much reason for optimism. He has, however, previously triumphed in a few qualifying matches to advance to the main draw.
Kyrgios will try to control the action with his strong serve and powerful groundstrokes. Gojowczyk should also be on the lookout for underhanded serves from time to time. In two qualifying rounds, the German has served reasonably well, making a total of 27 aces.
