Price turned in the tournament’s best performance so far to defeat De Sousa in a thrilling game, averaging 104.64 to finish with an astonishing 16-14 triumph and set up a matchup with Danny Noppert in the semifinals. In Friday night’s opening match, the winner of the UK Open eliminated fellow countryman Dirk van Duijvenbode 16-11 and progressed to the final four.
During the second session, the 37-year-old Price continued to comprehensively outperform the Portuguese superstar, but De Sousa’s two-dart 93 combination tied the score at five all despite a 12-point difference in averages. In leg 12, Price’s constant pressure paid off as he eventually gained some separation with a stylish 88 finish. However, De Sousa responded forcefully by winning a remarkable 90 finish with back-to-back double 18s. After De Sousa failed on the outer ring for the first time, the Welshman answered with a third successive break to set up a three-leg lead. Price did not budge, increasing his lead to 13-8.
Price appeared to be cruising through to the semi-finals, but De Sousa had other ideas, producing a remarkable five-leg burst to level up proceedings, featuring two 12-darters and a magnificent 100 checkout culminating with two double tops. The second seed stopped the rot with consecutive 14-darters to move one leg away from victory, only for the former Grand Slam champion to conjure up a sublime ten-dart skin saver to prolong the tussle.
Despite only missing seven darts at doubles the entire match, De Sousa blew five darts at a double to force a tie-break in the thrilling conclusion, which allowed Price to seal a renowned triumph. Thanks to the victory and at least £50,000 in prize money, Price will overtake Peter Wright as the number one player in the world following the competition, but he will still be concentrating on the fight for the Phil Taylor Trophy.
