Read on to find out how the Indian athletes have fared in the competition so far and how many still have a chance to bag a medal.
Golden boy Neeraj Chopra leads the pack
Indiaโs golden boy, Neeraj Chopra, did not disappoint as he made it to the finals of the javelin throw competition with his first throw itself. Chopra launched his javelin to a staggering 88.39m to make his way into the finals of the competition.
If Neeraj Chopra does indeed manage to win a medal at the WCH Oregon22, he would still be only the second Indian athlete to clinch a podium finish at the championships. Anju Bobby George was the first to win a bronze in the womenโs long jump at Paris in 2003.
Neerajโs colleagues, Annu Rani and Rohit Yadav, will also join him in the finals after both qualified for the javelin throw finals in their respective categories.
Eldhose Paul also managed to become the first Indian to make his way into the triple jump finals. He finished sixth in his group with an effort of 16.68m, which was enough to secure him a berth at the World Championship finals.
Indian athletes bowย out in disappointment
Besides Neeraj Chopra, there were others from the team of WCH Oregon22 Indian athletes seemed likely to finish with a medal, including Murali Sreeshankar. Sreeshankar, who could have reached the final of his long jump event, dropped out with a disappointing seventh place.
His performance was, however, much better than Jeswin Aldrin and Muhammed Anees Yahiya. The two jumpers failed to even make it to the qualification rounds.
The 20km race walkers, Sandeep Kumar and Priyanka Goswami, were the first Indian athletes to compete in the championships. However, they finished far behind, at 34th and 40th in their respective events.
Avinash Sable looked to be in a strong position after reaching the 3000m steeplechase finals. However, he faltered there with an 11th place finish.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor suffered the most disappointment after he could not turn up for his event due to groin injury. Parul Chaudhary and MP Jabir were also knocked out in the early qualification rounds of their respective 3000m women steeplechase and 400m hurdle events.
