Dr. Ajay Parida, director of the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) in Bhubaneswar, passed suddenly on Tuesday morning in Guwahati, Assam. He was 58 years old when he died.

Who Was Ajay Parida?

Dr. Ajay Parida was a famous Indian biologist who has been in news from sometime because he died unexpectedly in Guwahati.

He was born on December 12th, 1963 in the hamlet of Bhagabanpur in the Odisha district of Jajpur. His family included his wife and one son. He reportedly has one brother named Amiya Kumar Parida.

He graduated from Utkal University. He received his PhD from Delhi University and completed post-doctoral research at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines, the University of Wales in the UK, and the University of Naples in Italy.

On the 19th of July, he died of a suspected heart attack when he was in Guwahati. At the time of his death, he was 58 years old.

His Career

He was considered a pioneer in plant molecular biology, biotechnology, and agriculture. From 2009 to 2016, he was the executive director of the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai.

In 2017, he joined ILS which is now a member of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a project that the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Ministry of Health jointly started to track coronavirus genetic variants.

Ajay Parida has received numerous honours for his work, including the National Bioscience Award for Career Development from the Government of India, the Umakant Sinha Memorial Award from the Indian Science Congress Association, the B. M. Birla Science Prize from the Birla Science Foundation, and the NASI-Reliance Award for Application-Oriented Research from the National Academy of Sciences.

Additionally, he received the National Academy of Agriculture Sciences Recognition Award and the TATA Innovation Fellowship from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

In 2012, Ajay Parida was chosen to serve as President of the Indian Science Congress’s Agriculture, Science, and Forestry division. In 2014, Dr. Parida presided over the National Academy of Sciences India’s Biological Sciences Session.
