Google celebrated the 112th birth anniversary of the world-renowned physicist and electronic music composer with a Google Doodle.
In honoring Oscar Sala, the site read, “Sala also built the Quartett-Trautonium, Concert Trautonium and the Volkstrautonium. His efforts in electronic music opened the field of subharmonics. With his dedication and creative energy, he became a one-man orchestra.”
Personal life
Oskar Sala wasn’t a musician by accident. He was fond of it since his early years. Moreover, his mother, Annemarie, was a singer herself, and his father was supportive of his passion.

Oskar Sala was married to Kathe Sala, his travel companion who passed away in 1999.
In 1910, Sala was born in Greiz, Germany. Both his parents shared a love for music. His father was an ophthalmologist while his mother was a professional musician. As early as 14, Oskar was producing music for piano and violin. Soon, he started attending Paul Hindemith’s master’s class composition studies.
Around the time of composition classes, Oskar met the creator of Trautonium, Friedrich Trautwein. And that proved to be a turning point for him as he set out to study physics at the University Of Berlin.
Studying physics enabled Oskar to develop the Trautonium significantly, and thus as an electro-engineer and composer, he made Mixture-Trautonium.
Career
Oskar Sala’s life was devoted to the betterment of music. Mixture-Trautonium was only one of the many versions of Trautonium created by him. The others were: Quartett-Trautonium, Concert Trautonium, Volkstrautonium and Radio Trautonium, which was created without Trautwein’s assistance.
And while he started his musical journey quite early, his first work presentation didn’t come out early until 1962, when he was 52 years old. Later he went on to produce sounds for Rolf Thiele’s Rosemary (1959) and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1962).
