PDC Betfred World Matchplay Darts 2022 kicked-off on 16th July with a series of exciting matches, we take a look at the tournament format, latest results, Day 3 schedule, tickets, draw, fixtures, prize money

As 2018 champion Gary Anderson lost on Day Two in Blackpool, Michael van Gerwen made his big-stage comeback with a victory over Adrian Lewis in his Betfred World Matchplay first round match on Sunday night.

Betfred World Matchplayย Tournament Format

The best of 19 legs format will be used in all of the opening round matches. The second round of matches will all be best of 21 legs. Following that, all quarterfinal matches will be best-of-31-leg games. While the final will use a Best of 35 Leg format, the semi-final will similarly use a Best of 33 Legs style.

Day 2 Evening Session Match Events and Winners

In just his second game since having surgery on his throwing arm last month, Van Gerwen overcame a lackluster performance to defeat 2013 runner-up Lewis at the Winter Gardens 10-7. Meanwhile, Cullen defeated World Cup winner Damon Heta 10-2 to advance through to the second round. Midway through the match, Cullen reeled off nine consecutive legs to destroy the struggling Australian.

In the final 16, Nathan Aspinall will face 2007 winner James Wade after claiming a stunning 10-5 victory over the highly anticipated Luke Humphries. Elsewhere, Wade started his quest for a second World Matchplay title with a tenacious 10-4 victory over Martin Lukeman, a rookie, in a match characterized by missed doubles.

Day 2 Afternoon Session Match Events and Winners

After falling behind 8-4 in the first tie-break of this year’s World Matchplay, Michael Smith mounted an incredible comeback to defeat Andrew Gilding in the afternoon session of Day 2. He won seven of the final eight legs to keep his title aspirations alive. In another exciting match, two-time TV champion Daryl Gurney defeated sixth seed Anderson 10-7 to send him packing earlier than he had in the past ten years.

In the opening match of Day 2, Ryan Searle, the runner-up from the Players Championship Finals, was defeated by Van Duijvenbode after falling behind 6-3. Danny Noppert, a fellow countryman of van Duijvenbode, also rallied to beat Brendan Dolan in a hard-fought match and advance to the second round.
