The Ramon Magsaysay Award, also known as the “Nobel Prize of Asia,” is a prestigious honor that recognizes remarkable spirit and powerful leadership with the 2023 winners list out

This year, four Asians received the Ramon Magsaysay Award, joining the ranks of Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, Satyajit Ray, and many more.

Korvi Rakshand of Bangladesh, Eugenio Lemos of Timor-Leste, Miriam Coronel-Ferrer of the Philippines, and Dr Ravi Kannan R. of India are among them. The award includes a certificate, a medallion carrying the late President’s picture, and a cash prize of USD 50,000.

Winners List

Korvi Rakshand

Korvi Rakshand, the non-profit organization JAAGO Foundation’s founder, is the 13th Bangladeshi to receive the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award. JAAGO has developed dramatically since its establishment in 2007, delivering free, government-recognized English language education to over 30,000 students across Bangladesh.

Rakshand was recognized by the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation for his remarkable work in promoting inclusive education for poor children in Bangladesh, which has led to local adolescents adopting much-needed societal improvements.

Eugenio Lemos

Eugenio Lemos, an agriculture expert from Timor-Leste in Southeast Asia, has helped the Timorese population embrace new methods to appreciate agriculture and natural preservation. Lemos has championed organic farming since his university days, and after being introduced to modern sustainable agrosystems, he began working on adopting similar methods with traditional Timorese culture.

According to the Foundation of Ramon Magsaysay Award, Lemos is an activist, musician, and performer who isn’t afraid to use his songs to raise awareness about social concerns. He is recognized in his community as a down-to-earth person who has made significant contributions to how young Timorese perceive nature and their surroundings.

Miriam Coronel-Ferrer

Miriam Coronel-Ferrer has made significant contributions to resolving war issues and resisting martial law in her country since the late 1970s. This Philippine peace negotiator was involved in the creation of the country’s first ‘National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security,’ an agenda that was eventually officially endorsed in 2010.

Coronel-Ferrer was recognized for the award by the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation for her “unwavering belief in the transformative power of nonviolent strategies in peacebuilding,” among other notable contributions that have made her a powerful voice that promotes inclusion, condemns violence, and preaches peace for women everywhere.

Dr Ravi Kannan R

Dr. Ravi Kannan R., the Cachar Cancer Hospital and Research Centre’s (CCHRC) first properly qualified oncologist, helped build the non-profit facility into the full-fledged, comprehensive treatment center it is today. The current CCHRC houses twenty-eight departments, including but not limited to oncology, radiology, tumor registry, and other facets of cancer care.

Kannan was chosen for this year’s prize by the Ramon Magsaysay prize Foundation for his strong devotion to his medical profession, focusing on what medicine is actually for: pro-health and people-centered care. Kannan and his organization have assisted millions of Indians, including Assamese, in finding a dependable and inclusive healthcare facility.
