24 Hours Of Le Mans 2022 Schedule, Dates, Time, Teams, Drivers, Rules, Format, Venue And Live Stream Where To Watch

This week marks the 90th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

After being staged behind closed doors in 2020 and then with limited admission last year owing to the Covid-19 outbreak, the world’s most famous vehicle endurance race will once again welcome a complete public.

The event, which lasts 24 hours, includes a lot of rules and regulations that the drivers and teams must follow. So, here’s a rundown of the race’s format and everything you need to know throughout the week.

How does a team win a 24 hour le man’s competition?

The 24 Hours of Le Mans will be won by the team that covers the most mileage during the event. Over the 24 hours, each team has three drivers who alternate.

When do you have to qualify for 24 hours of le men? How does it work, exactly?

There are four free practice sessions, a qualifying session, and Hyperpole ahead of the race starting on Saturday, June 11 at 15:00. They are organised as follows:

Wednesday, June 8

  • 13:00 to 16:00 – Free practice 1
  • 18:00 to 19:00 – Qualifying session
  • 21:00 to 23:00 – Free practice 2

Thursday, June 9

  • 14:00 to 17:00 – Free practice 3
  • 19:00 to 19:30 – Hyperpole
  • 21:00 to 23:00 – Free practice 4

Drivers compete in qualifying to post the quickest lap time, and the majority of the starting positions for the race are decided during this session. However, laying down a flying lap in qualifying is challenging with up to 62 cars on the course. As a result, the six fastest drivers in each class will qualify for Hyperpole, with the top six from that session determining the top six spots in each class for the race.
The practice sessions allow teams to fine-tune their skills.

When does the race begin?

Following the confirmation of the grid and the completion of the final practise session, the warm-up on Saturday is followed by the race, as follows:

Saturday, June 11
9:30 to 9:45 – Warm-up
15:00 – The race

Sunday, June 12

15:00 – Finish

Where do the 24 hours of le mans begin?

For a running start, the drivers are guided around the track by a safety car for one lap while preserving the order in which they qualified. When the safety car enters pit lane at the end of this lap, the race is taken over by the car in front, and the 24 hours begin when each car crosses the finish line.
