2025 Stanley Cup design and history

The Stanley Cup was originally commissioned back in 1892 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. It is currently the oldest trophy awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America. The trophy is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, who was Canada’s Governor General at the time.

It originally featured a silver bowl design and it has since become a multi-tiered monument engraved with the names of past and present champions. Although the NHL controls its use, two Canadian trustees officially oversee the cup. The Stanley Cup trophy is notably made of a silver and nickel alloy.

The system the National Hockey League uses to pay their players is based on a playoff bonus pool and a fund set aside each year in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). This pool is distributed among the 16 playoff teams following a merit system, with teams that advance futher earning more money and first round losers share a total pool of $2 million (about $250,000 per team across eight teams), second round losers split another $2 million (roughly $500,000 per team among four teams) while the two teams eliminated in the conference finals receive $1.25 million each, totaling $2.5 million.

2025 Stanley Cup medals and championship rings

Alongside the Stanley Cup itself, the players and staff members of the winning team also receive personalized championship rings and official NHL championship medals. The medals feature an engraving of the team’s name, year, as well as the NHL insignia. Meanwhile, the rings are often custom-designed with diamonds and team insignia, and serve as a symbol of the ultimate achievement in hockey.
