Pole-vaulter Rosy Meena Paulraj reached new heights in the 36th National Games in Gandhinagar on Saturday alongside weightlifter N Ajith, who also broke national records. To beat VS Surekha’s 2014 and 2015 National Games records, Rosy Meena Paulraj, 24, improved her personal best from 4.00 to 4.20 meter after getting into a nice rhythm. With a lift of 174 kg, Ajith shattered the National Record in the Clean and Jerk, putting track and field athletes’ National Games records to shame.
Jeswin Aldrin, a long-jumper, set a new National Games record on his third attempt to jump 8.21m, making him the highlight player on second day of track & field competition at IIT Gandhinagar. Later, Aldrin improved his performance to 8.26m on final effort and won gold medal despite best efforts from fellow competitor M Sreeshankar. Amlan Borgohain, who set the men’s 100-meter record for the National Games on Friday in the semifinals at 10.28 seconds, ran a tenth of a second slower in the final, but he still finished ahead of the Tamil Nadu duo of VK Elakiyadasan and B Siva Kumar.
The Gujarat women’s tennis team defeated Maharashtra to reclaim the gold medal at the National Games. Maharashtra, who had been favoured to win the gold medal in both the men’s and women’s kabaddi competitions, had to settle for silver. With his 20.75-meter shot put throw, Tajinder Pal Singh Toor set a new national record and won the gold medal on Saturday.
