The 35-year old earned his 89th career title at the Melbourne Cup defeating Maxime Cressy of America 7-6(6) 6-3 in the final of the ATP 250 event before the first Grand Slam of the year starts.
Nadal is looking for his 21st Grand Slam at the Australian Open that is scheduled to begin from January 17th and seeing his title win at Melbourne says a lot about his preparations.
The Spanish professional ended the game in his favour in an hour and 44 minutes against the American by saving a set point in the first set tie break and bouncing back from a breakdown in the second set before he managed to upset Cressy.
“Very happy to start the season with a title and from where we are coming, it’s very special,” said the Spaniard after the match at Melbourne.
Previously before upsetting Cressy, Nadal overcame Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland, 6-4, 7-5 in the semi-finals.

Finalist- $48,365
Semifinalist- $27,220
Quarterfinalist- $15,490
Round of 16- $8,890
Round of 32- $5,200
That means Nadal will be awarded $87,370 prize money while the runner up, Maxime Cressy will be awarded $48,365.
A good start of the season, Nadal will be trying to defend his 21st Grand Slam title along with Novak Djokovic, who ties with the Spaniard and Swiss Roger Federer with 20 Grand Slams. Although the Serb is caught up with controversy over his exemption, let’s see who can overtake with most Grand Slams at the Australian Open in the absence of Roger Federer. Or could it be World Number two, Daniil Medvedev? The tournament starts on January 17th.
