A TikTok user @vaatsalya.c explained that the ’12 grapes under the table’ trend is a ritual that is famous among the Hispanic community. In the video, which has got more than 1 million views, the user stated, ‘one would need to go under the table at sharp 11:58 pm on the New Year’s Eve and eat 12 grapes until 12:01 am on New Year’s Day.’
In order to do trend, the person needs to be dressed in red and wear red lipstick before they go under the table and make their wishes.The TikToker stated that the grapes represent each month of the year and that the ritual is said to bring good luck in the upcoming year.

Modern Family fans might remember that ritual was mentioned in the earlier episode of the ABC sitcom. In the 4th season episode 11th, it has been titled as New Year’s Eve, Gloria revealed that she needed a dozen grapes in order for finishing the tradition at midnight.
Explaining her husband Jay (Ed O’Neill), she stated, ‘she needed exactly 12 grapes for doing this tradition and that each one represents a wish she plans to make.’ The character attributed her wonderful family life and her home in Palm Springs to the ritual.
