For context, on Wednesday, Constitutional Court judges voted 6-3 to accept a petition submitted by 40 senators to remove Srettha, a member of the Pheu Thai Party.

The senators criticized Srettha’s appointment of former lawyer Pichit Chuenban, who had been jailed for 6 months in 2008 for contempt of court, after allegedly attempting to bribe court officials with 2 million baht, which is approximately $55,218, hidden in a grocery bag.

They argued that the appointment did not meet ethical and moral standards. Critics also speculated that Pichit’s connections to billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, who founded the Pheu Thai Party in 2007, played a role in his rise.

Srettha was formally removed by the Constitutional Court in Bangkok, making him the fourth Thai prime minister in 16 years to be ousted by the court.
