After the shooting, the suspect, 38-year-old Francisco Oropeza, was still at large and officials issued a warning that he could still be armed.
Just before midnight on Friday, the attack took place on a street north of Houston, close to the hamlet of Cleveland, where some locals claim it is normal to hear neighbors shooting off firearms to relax.
Francisco Oropeza used an AR-style weapon, according to San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers, and as the hunt for him continued into Saturday night, officials expanded their search to areas “10 to 20 miles” away from the crime site.
The shooting was the most recent instance of gun violence in the US this year, which has seen a record number of mass shootings, some of which also featured semiautomatic weapons.
