After the publication of their most recent book, “A Smart Girl’s Guide: Body Image,” the well-known toy company American Girl found itself at the center of intense controversy amid claims that it taught readers how to change their gender without their parent’s consent.
Mel Hammond, the author of the book, has also advised using puberty inhibitors without telling their parents.

The book, which is aimed at females between the ages of three and twelve, also says that if you haven’t yet reached puberty, your doctor may recommend medication to slow down your body’s alterations and give you more time to consider your gender identity.

She is a native of Madison, Wisconsin, USA.
Her LinkedIn page states that she graduated from Hollins University with a degree in English. She holds a master’s degree in English Language and Literature with a focus on children’s literature from Kansas State University.
Her Career
As an intern in the art studio at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Mel Hammond started her career in communication. She has also worked as a public relations intern for Gagliardi Gallery and then as a writing intern for College Prowler.
Later, she was employed by the Hollins University Writing Center as a Writing Tutor. Her main duty as a tutor was to work with 8 to 10 college students each week to help them with their writing. She has also worked at Kansas State University as a graduate teaching assistant and an editing intern.
Her first job as a full-time writer was at a Wisconsin-based software development business named Epic, where she spent almost three years before joining American Girl.
Mel Hammond is presently employed at American girl as a content development editor. For the company, she has written three books.
