Haris Farooqi, also known as Harish Ajmal Farukhi, and Anurag Singh were apprehended near the international border after crossing over from Bangladesh. The arrests were made based on information from sister agencies and the accused are wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam, which made the arrests, intends to hand over the accused to the NIA for further legal proceedings.
The Assam Police received information that two top leaders of ISIS namely Haris Farooqi and Anurag Singh were in a neighbouring country.
Based on specific input, two top-rung leaders of ISIS in India were apprehended from the Dharmasala area of Dhubri Sector and brought to the STF office in Guwahati. The Special Task Force (STF) under Sri Parthasarathi Mahanta, IPS, IGP (STF), and Sri Kalyan Kumar Pathak, APS, Addl SP, STF, was deployed to locate and apprehend these individuals. The STF successfully apprehended the suspects,who are also wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Haris Farooqi, the alleged head of ISIS in India, is a resident of Dehradun. Anurag Singh aka Rehan of Diwana , on the other hand, hails from Panipat, Haryana. Singh is reported to have converted to Islam, and his wife is said to be a Bangladeshi national. Both Farooqi and Singh are described as highly indoctrinated and motivated leaders of the Islamic State in India.
Haris aka Harish Ajmal Farukhi of Chakrata studied at the Aligarh Muslim University and founded the Students of AMU group. He was a topper and students addressed him as Ameer (Chief).

The STF Assam has announced its intention to hand over the arrested individuals to the NIA for further legal proceedings. This step highlights the collaborative effort among law enforcement agencies to combat terrorism effectively.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the state police for their successful operation. He expressed determination to continue the fight against fundamentalism and terrorism under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sarma’s commendation underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the nation.

According to the police, Farooqi and Singh have been actively furthering the cause of ISIS in India. They are accused of conspiring to carry out recruitment, terror funding, and acts of terrorism using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at various locations across the country. The duo has been implicated in several cases registered by the NIA and the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS).
