He was succeeded by Kamran Rizvi, who was appointed as the new Officer on Special Duty in the Heavy Industries Ministry last month.
The third position at the nation’s leading polling organization has been unfilled for almost six months. The Indian government announced his appointment in a press statement on Saturday.

“The president is pleased to appoint Shri Arun Goel, IAS (Retd.) (PB: 1985) as the Election Commissioner in the Election Commission with effect from the date he assumes the office.”

Who Is Arun Goel?
Arun Goel is a retired Indian bureaucrat. He has been in the news because he has been appointed as the new election commissioner of India.
He is an IAS official from the 1985 batch who left the Ministry of Heavy Industries on November 18, 2022, barely one day before he was appointed the Indian Election Commissioner.
He graduated from Delhi College of Engineering in 1980 with a degree in electrical engineering. Later, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmadabad awarded him a postgraduate degree in management in 1982.
Along with a degree in economics and development management from Himachal Pradesh University, he also holds postgraduate degrees from Glasgow Caledonian University in the UK.
He is currently 60 years old.
His Career
Arun Goel worked for the government for 34 years as an IAS officer, holding a variety of significant positions including Additional Secretary in the GST Council, Director of the Project Monitoring Group at the PMO, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce (1994–1998), and Head of Financial Intelligence Unit–India at the Ministry of Finance (2006- 2010).
He most recently served as the Ministry of Heavy Industries’ secretary. Recently, just before his retirement, he was appointed as the new election commissioner of India.
