The Italian officiated at both the Euro 2020 tournament and his first World Cup match in 2018. The first leg of the World Cup play-off between Honduras and Australia was one of many international friendlies and World Cup qualifying games that Orsato had previously refereed. Since 2010, he has also served as a senior referee in Serie A.
What has he so far done?
Orsato debuted in Serie C in 2002 before making the switch to the top Serie A league in time for the 2006–07 campaign. In the division, he has since made around 200 appearances.
The Italian has participated in Champions League games since 2012. Orsato then officiated the 2020 Champions League final match between PSG and Bayern Munich before officiating the Real Madrid vs. Chelsea second-leg semifinal.
Has he ever utilised VAR?
After viewing the situation via VAR, Orsato overturned a judgement in a Serie A match between Inter Milan and Juventus. The Italian made the right choice to dismiss Matias Vecino of Inter rather than maintain the yellow card he had already issued.
However, he controversially declined to utilise VAR in the same game after failing to show Miralem Pjanic a card for a high tackle on Rafinha despite the Bosnian player previously having received a yellow. The choice would be significant as Juve went on to win 3-2 in extra time. Since the 2017–18 season, VAR has been utilised in the Italian Serie A. Orsato works as a regular league official.
Additionally, in 2019, he officiated the controversial Champions League match between Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. Presnel Kimpembe’s handball in the 94th minute led to an Orsato VAR penalty, which Marcus Rashford converted to advance United.
Which matches at Euro 2020 did he officiate?
In England’s 1-0 victory over Croatia, Daniele Orsato earned his Euro 2020 debut. And after that match, he officiated Spain vs. Poland, giving the Spaniards a penalty following a VAR review. Later, he oversaw Ukraine’s triumph over Sweden in the tournament’s round of 16 matches.
He is paid a base salary of $70,000 for the world cup in 2022 and $3,000 in match fees for every fixture.
