It has been a hard journey for Mata to get to this point as the starting kicker for a Power 5 club, despite his generous 5-foot-9 reported height on the Buffs roster. He was raised playing football in Mexico and Brazil over the first decade of his life after being born in Honduras.

Mata was born in San Pedro Sula but his love for the game of football began in Panama, where his father is from. Growing up, Mata’s dad competed in every sport he could from soccer to volleyball. In his final year of high school, he came to the United States and eventually attended college in Tennessee and there he began to fall in love with the sport of football and passed that love down to his son, Alejandro, who came to the United States in 2016.

Alejandro Mata ultimately gained a starting spot as a junior at Buford High School and excelled right away, earning all-state honours and making the game-winning field goal in the state championship match, as per to what a report suggests by Denver Gazette’s outlet.

As a result, Sanders was given a scholarship to play for Jackson State, and after only missing two field goals throughout the entire season (both of which were blocked), he was named an FCS freshman all-American.

He played four seasons for Bryant Appling’s coaching staff at Buford High School. He was voted the FG Champion at the 2021 GA Spring Camp competition at the Chris Sailer Kicking Camp. He finished second in the Last Man Standing competition during the camp in Las Vegas.
