Ram & Sharad Kothari were grandsons of Lt. Badri Das ji Kothari, & Son of Lt. Hiralal ji Kothari and the two brave sons were born on 27th July 1968 & 14th October 1970.
Sharad aged 20 & Ram aged 22, both unmarried, had cleared two of the RSS post exams, and were to give the final examinations. In the mean time in 1989, the RAM JANAM BHOOMI LIBERATION MOVEMENT took momentum and in the September of 1989, both these brothers, left the materialistic comforts and the love of blood relations for a higher cause.
On 22nd October 1990, among the sixty nine members, who were departing for Ayodhya, Ram & Sharad Kothari led the troop and after departing from Kolkata, their group had to stop at Benaras.
Finally, they reached their destination on 30th October, at 4 a.m and called “the D-Day of Karseva”, 30 October saw the start of unprecedented security arrangements. Police barred all bus and train services to Ayodhya.
After the heroic victory, they still had the urge to do something more for their religion, for their god, for their country! For this reason, they returned back to Ayodhya from Faizabad on 2nd of November and tried to voice their cause in RAMDHUNI KIRTAN.
This way on 2nd November 1990 these legends set an example of bravery & patriotism and their contribution to the motherland.
Hailing from Kolkata, the Kothari brothers journeyed to Ayodhya in October 1990 to participate in the kar seva to the Ram Mandir movement. Their arrival was part of the first batch of kar sevaks, individuals driven by a deep sense of religious duty and a fervent desire to contribute to the construction of the Ram Mandir
On October 30, 1990, the Kothari brothers actively engaged in the kar seva in Ayodhya, a sacred endeavor that drew together thousands of devotees from across the country. Two days later, on November 2, tragedy struck when both brothers were shot dead at point-blank range by the security forces during their participation in the kar seva. Both were Jains.
The news of the untimely demise of Ram Kumar, 23, and Sharad Kumar, 20, sent shockwaves throughout the nation. Hindus across India were outraged, and the Kothari brothers quickly became revered figures, regarded as heroes and martyrs of the Ram Mandir movement. Their sacrifice not only fueled the emotional intensity of the movement but also became a rallying point, drawing a large number of youth into the cause.
The deaths of the Kothari brothers were more than mere casualties; they became a symbol of unwavering dedication and an unyielding spirit in the face of adversity. The incident highlighted the challenges and tensions surrounding the movement, as security forces clashed with fervent devotees.
The Kothari brothers’ sacrifice left an indelible mark on the collective consciousness of the Hindu community, amplifying the call for the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The images of the two young brothers who had journeyed far from their hometown with hopes of contributing to a sacred cause, resonated deeply with the masses.
Their tragic end spurred increased participation in the Ram Mandir movement, particularly among the youth. The Kothari brothers’ names became synonymous with the struggle for the construction of the temple and their memory was enshrined in the hearts of those who sought to see the fulfilment of their shared dream.
