The focus of When the Phone Rings is a “show window couple.” The phrase, which is Korean meaning “two people married just for show,” describes a pair who are locked in a marriage where a divorce is unlikely. A politically arranged marriage between Hong Hee-ju (Chae Soo-bin) and Baek Sa-eon (Yoo Yeon-seok) is in its third year. A menacing phone call opens the story.

Many fans have been drawn in by Yoo Yeon-seok and Chae Soo-bin’s chemistry. A radio station employs Baek Sa-eon, a veteran hostage negotiator and war correspondent. Hong Hee-ju is a sign language interpreter at the same station.

Many viewers are captivated by the show because of the contrast in their personalities and natures as well as the story of a politically motivated arranged marriage.
