On the final day of the Eredivisie season, following Ajax’s 3-1 loss to FC Twente, the incident occurred near the team bus that Berghuis was getting ready to board. The 31-year-old former Watford player is seen in the video reacting violently to what looks to be a fan’s shout.

After the loss, Ajax midfielder Steven Berghuis appeared to punch an FC Twente supporter. He can be seen in the video making his way towards a crowd as he approaches the team bus. Then he turned around, leaned over the barrier, and punched one of the spectators.

Later, he was swiftly escorted away by a security guard, but the attacking midfielder continued to argue with him. The 45-cap Netherlands international allegedly responded violently when the fan made a racial slur about his teammate, Brian Brobbey, according to Dutch news outlet Tubantia.

The ex-Feyenoord player replaced another player for the final 18 minutes of the match against Twente, where he was promptly given a yellow card.  Ajax may have had a terrible season, but Berghuis was a notable player for the team. He contributed to 42 games in all competitions with a total of 11 goals and the same number of assists.

The player has issued an apology.

Berghuis later issued a statement in which he expressed regret for his behaviour. “I regret my actions; I should not have done this,” he declared. “People seem to think they can shout anything, which I’m used to by this point. My response does not resolve the issue. I comprehend. It’s bad because I play for an excellent club, Ajax.”

What’s next for Ajax?

The renowned Dutch club has had a rough season. For the first time since 2009, they placed third in the league but were unable to advance to the Champions League. On the other hand, Feyenoord, the arch rivals of Ajax won the Dutch league with finishing 13 points ahead of them. Moreover, it was their first championship since 2017.
