According to accounts, the event occurred in late May when the couple was bound near Wa Naa’s Palace before being lashed 20 times each. The Wa Naa (King of the Wala people), whose true name is Na Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, sentenced the pair, saying:

“In addition to the flogging, the parents of the boy and girl will agree to allow the two to marry and live together as a pair to act as a deterrence to the young and live upright lives.”

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) condemned the brutal penalty, saying, “The flogging of young people is ancient, primitive, barbaric, and abhorrent, and the GBA opposes it unequivocally.” Articles 12 (2) and 15 (1) (2) (a) and (b) of the 1992 Constitution are violated by the inhumane conduct.”

The GBA has also reportedly urged that “all those engaged in the physical abuse of the two young persons be arrested, the event be investigated, and the criminals are punished in line with the law.”

Who is arrested?

Three persons have been detained in connection with the crime – “Phone repairer Bushran Khidiri, 32, was arrested for the flogging after reportedly dragging the woman into town.” Issahaku Mahama, 70, and 62-year-old farmer Naa Sidiki Mahama were also detained for their roles in the lash distribution, according to The Daily Star.
