Judd Trump and Kyren Wilson won back-to-back 6-5 thrillers in the remaining first-round matches on Wednesday, transforming what had been a sluggish start to the event.

In the last eight, the English duo will rekindle their rivalry, although all four matches remaining in the Masters draw may easily be worthy finals.

Snooker Masters Quarter Finals Draws, Schedule And Predictions

Mark Williams (9) vs John Higgins (8)

Thursday, 7pm

With victories over Yan Bingtao and Zhao Xintong, Mark Williams and John Higgins demonstrated that the proposed changing of the guard may be a little premature.

Despite reaching their fourth decades on the Main Tour, the famous duo can still produce snooker at the greatest level, having won 16 Triple Crown championships between them.

Williams and Higgins have been professional since 1992, and their first meeting was in the 1994 Thailand Open, where the Welshman won in a decider.

In their most recent meeting, Higgins won 4-3 in the 2021 Northern Ireland Open, which was their 63rd overall.

For all intents and purposes, this matchup has the makings of being just as close as those, and picking a winner in either direction is difficult.

Higgins has a better overall record against Williams, but Williams appeared sharper in their first duels against the young Chinese opposition — Yan, of course, representing the incumbent champion.

Neil Robertson (5) vs Ronnie O’Sullivan (4)

Thursday, 1pm

While the above match may be the round’s best, the one that comes before it on Thursday isn’t too awful either.

Neil Robertson will have a quick opportunity to revenge his setback to Ronnie O’Sullivan in the World Grand Prix final from just before Christmas in Coventry.

The latter won a lot of praise for his overwhelming performance against Jack Lisowski in round one, but the truth is that his opponent was a cakewalk, and O’Sullivan will be put under greater strain this time around.

Robertson is one of the most feared scorers in the game, and he can be difficult to stop when he’s on a roll, but he also has a habit of mucking up his opportunities in big games by getting caught up in his own thoughts.

Nonetheless, O’Sullivan and Robertson games have generally been free-flowing affairs with large contributions in abundance over the years.

There’s no reason to expect anything different in this fight, and it’s a potentially exciting tit-for-tat that shouldn’t be missed.

Judd Trump (3) vs Kyren Wilson (6)

Friday, 1pm

Judd Trump and Kyren Wilson renew their rivalry in the quarter-finals of the Masters draw, as the only two players who went the distance in the opening round.

Trump and Wilson have a long history of feuding over respect for one another, and there have been a few instances in the past where they have hurled insulting remarks at one another.

Wilson is keen to be recognised a member of the elite, but despite regularly defeating the world’s best players, the Kettering cueist has yet to win on the major stages.

The 30-year-old has a nearly even head-to-head record with Trump, having recently defeated his countryman in a low-key Championship League match.

Trump has had the upper hand since losing to Wilson in the 2020 World Championship, a result that extended the Curse of the Crucible.

Barry Hawkins (11) vs Mark Selby (2)

Friday, 7pm

Because the other three quarter-final matches are creating such compelling narratives, the remaining tie between Mark Selby and Barry Hawkins may fly under the radar.

For the first time since 2014, the world champion and world number one is expected to advance to the competition’s semi-finals, but Hawkins is no pushover.

Indeed, an intriguing head-to-head record of 17 victories apiece exists, however Selby leads when their substantial number of Championship League encounters are removed.

They met at the same level of the 2017 Masters, with Hawkins coming out on top that day, so the Hawk has fond memories of facing his close friend in the English capital.

The Jester hasn’t had a really good season, but he always seems to pull out big results in the big tournaments, so it would be a bit of a shock if he lost here.
