Married Hindu women who have living husbands commemorate this day as a vow with deep devotion and pray for their husband’s long life. And, because we all know that this pooja occurs once a year, let us learn more about it:

The History Behind Sabitri Brata

The Brata was called after Savitri, King Aswapati of Madra Desa’s lovely daughter while, on the other hand,  Satyavan was an exiled prince living in the jungle with his blind father Dyumatsen.

After falling in love with him, Savitri fled the palace and moved into the wilderness with her spouse and in-laws.  She went to tremendous measures to care for them as a loving wife and daughter-in-law.

Satyavan’s mind spun one day while cutting wood in the bush, and he fell from a tree. Then Satyavan’s soul was taken away by Yama, the death god. Savitri, who was very saddened, pleaded with Yamraj not to take her husband away.

If anything, he’d steal her husband’s soul away from him, and she’d follow. Yamraj was affected by Savitri’s love and gave back her husband’s life. Satyavan soon reclaimed his lost empire.

Rituals In Odisha

Sabitri Brata adherents get up early in the morning, bathe, change their attire, and apply red vermillion to their foreheads.

A grinding stone/pestle represents Savitri metaphorically (Sila Pua). They decorate the Sila Pua with Haldi, sindoor, a new saree, and gold jewels after cleaning it.

Rice, wet pulses and fruits such as mango, jackfruit, banana, palm, date palm, and others are served as prasad.

The fasting begins at daybreak and finishes with evening prayers after sundown. The fast is broken by ingesting the Savitri offering. They are, however, permitted to eat fruits throughout the fast.

Women attend the shrine dressed in fresh sarees and bangles on this day. Some ladies do puja at their homes. They also read or listen to the Mahabharata’s Sabitri Brata Katha.
