Football Controversies: France And Real Madrid Striker Karim Benzema Found Guilty Under Extortion Charges
Karim Benzema and Mathieu Valbuena were playing for France in 2015 when Valbuena was blackmailed over a compromising video. Meanwhile, Karim Benzema was acting as a mediator and advised Valbuena to pay the ransom.
Valbuena was suspicious and confronted Benzema accusing him of wrongdoing which Benzema immediately denied. The trial began the same year and both the players were banned from playing for the National team.
The verdict on the blackmailing case came out yesterday and Karim Benzema was found guilty alongside 4 others. Each individual has been handed over a fine and Benzema will serve a suspended 1-year term and will pay €75,000 fine.
The amount may not be a huge concern for Real Madrid forward but the damage to the reputation will hurt him the most. Meanwhile, he can still feature for the French National team and it will be a huge sigh of relief from his side.
It will be interesting to see how Benzema reacts to this situation and how will the French forward come out of this. Real Madrid faces Sheriff Tiraspol today and will be looking to take revenge for the surprise defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu.
