2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour: Leg 7 – Julius Baer Generation Cup Semi-final Results, Final Schedule, & Latest Standings
Arjun Erigaisi of India and reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen will compete in the two-day Julius Baer Generation Cup final. Erigaisi won a blitz playoff against GM Le Quang Liem to advance to his first Tour final after Carlsen eliminated GM Vincent Keymer. The world champion, who was impressed with Keymer’s play, claimed the 17-year-old put up a nice fight throughout their encounter. Meanwhile, Le forced his match into a blitz play-off after Arjun dropped the fourth rapid game, but Arjun’s fantastic performance allowed him to win the tie and qualify for final.
There have only been three previous matches between Carlsen and Erigaisi: draws in the Goldmoney Asian Rapid tournament and the global blitz championship, as well as Carlsen’s victory in the preliminary round of this competition. Although Magnus Carlsen vs. Arjun Erigaisi is arguably the ideal chess tournament final featuring a generational clash, both players put in a lot of effort to get there. The winner of championship will be determined based on who has amassed the most points following two sets of four-round matches in the final.
