To add more woes to their performances last season, the club spent over £600 million on new transfers.
New arrivals and loanee returns
Chelsea have signed a host of new players for the 2023-24 season. The Blues signed Christopher Nkunku, Axel Disasi and Nicolas Jackson in the forward department. Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, who still has a contract with the club also rejoined the squad following the end of his one-year loan at Inter Milan. Meanwhile, they currently have 14 players in defensive with the return of players like Levi Colwill, Malo Gusto and Malang Sarr from loan. The Blues also went all out on signing midfielders Moises Caicedo (£115m), and Romeo Lavia (£58m).
Player departures
Aside from bringing in a host of new talents, Chelsea have also sold a string of first team players. Midfielders Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz joined Premier League champions Manchester City and Arsenal respectively. Meanwhile, the Senegalese duo of Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly both accepted offers to join the Saudi Pro League. Mendy and Koulibaly joined Al Ahli and Al Hilal respectively. Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek moved to the Serie A with AC Milan.
Mason Mount made a surprise move to EPL rivals Manchester United, while the club released N’Golo Kante and Cesar Azpilicueta. Hakim Ziyech meanwhile, joined Galatasaray on loan, while Real Madrid signed Kepa Arrizabalaga.
