Sreela Majumdar was born in 1959. She attended the Bangabassi College.

The actress is survived by her husband S.N.M. Abdi, a journalist and columnist, and their son Sohail Abdi but they didn’t have any daughter together.

reela Majumdar made her acting debut at the age of 16 in the 1980 film “Parashuram,” directed by the late Mrinal Sen. This marked the beginning of a prolific career that spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on Indian cinema.

Her collaboration with Mrinal Sen resulted in several iconic movies, including ‘Akaler Sandhane,’ ‘Ekdin Pratidin,’ and ‘Kharij,’ where her portrayal of characters like ‘Dugga,’ ‘Minu,’ and ‘Srija’ garnered critical acclaim.

Majumdar’s acting prowess was not confined to regional cinema; she ventured into alternate Indian movies and shared the screen with stalwarts like Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, and the late Smita Patil. Sreela Majumdar had been battling cancer for the past three years, as revealed by her husband, S.N.M. Abdi who is a journalist and columnist. Despite her health struggles, Majumdar continued to captivate audiences with her performances. She was admitted to a hospital earlier this month but was later brought back home, where she breathed her last on a Saturday afternoon.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences, “Saddened by the news of the demise of film actress Sreela Majumdar today afternoon.  We shall miss her stellar presence. My condolences to her family.”

Majumdar’s departure marks the end of an era in Bengali cinema, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come. Her contributions to both parallel and mainstream cinema showcase her versatility and commitment to the craft.
