Ronaldo and Messi are the most successful pair in the history of the award, having won seven and five respectively. Despite this, Messi’s two wins in the past four years have come alongside wins for Luka Modric (2018) and Karim Benzema (2022).
Ballon d’Or 2023 key dates
France Football will announce the confirmed shortlist of nominees for the award on September 6, 2023. Meanwhile, the official Ballon d’Or award ceremony will take place next on October 30, 2023.
Organisers have suggested the event will start at exactly 20:00 local time, although that is subject to change. The broadcasting rights owner for the ceremony is yet to be named, but the 2022 edition was broadcasted on media channels on YouTube, as well as the Eurosport website and app.
Ballon d’Or in 2023 voting format
While choosing the nominee list, the Ballon d’Or takes into account a player’s performances and achievements across one season (August-July). For the men’s Ballon d’Or award, about 180 journalists from around the world each representing a different country get to cast the final votes. Each voter ranks their top five players from the 30-man shortlist in order of merit.
Players ranked first in that list, receives five points, while the second receives four points, and so on. Following the end of the voting session, the overall winner is the player with the most total points. In case the voting ends in a tie, the winner is the player with the most first-place votes. Journalists give priority to individual performances when voting for the players, keeping team trophies as a secondary factor.
Ballon d’Or 2023 favourites
Despite leaving PSG and failing to win the Champions League, Messi is still a big favourite to win the award. However, incredible leadership during Argentina’s 2022 World Cup title and 20 goals for PSG last season are crucial factors.
Manchester City forward Haaland is the second favourite to win the award following an impressive debut season. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe is also one of the favourites to win the award. Reigning champion Benzema had an injury-disrupted final season at Real Madrid before joining Al Ittihad this summer, which could affect his chances of reclaiming the award.
