Spanish veteran and club icon Gerard Pique replaced the player.
Andreas Christensen Injury Update
Christensen suffered a sprain in his ankle ligament during Barça’s 1-0 loss to Inter Milan at the Giuseppe Meazza.
Earlier, the extent of Christensen’s injury wasn’t clear, but Barca offered a brief update and confirmed that he would undergo more tests.
However, following more tests, the club have confirmed that Christensen’s injury is worse than initially expected.
Following the tests conducted earlier on Wednesday, Christensen is suffering a grade two sprain in his left ankle.
What Does It Mean For Barcelona?
The injury could keep the centre-back sidelined for up to a month. This would mean that Christensen might not play for Barcelona again until after the FIFA World Cup.
Christensen’s injury further adds to Xavi’s growing injury list problem as Barcelona are currently short of center-back options. Further adding to the problem is the timing at which the problem has come up as it is a very busy time of the season ahead of the World Cup.
Barcelona will next face Celta at the weekend and then host Inter in another crucial group stage game next week. Following which the club will battle an El Clasico match at the Santiago Bernabeu with long-time rivals Real Madrid.
All eyes are on Xavi as fans are eager to see how the former club legend sets up his team for the upcoming matches with so many injuries at hand.
