The 16 teams are divided into four groups of four, with each group playing three games against the other teams in its group. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout rounds. With a 5-0 win over Canada in their Group C encounter, India’s men’s badminton team advanced to the knockout stages of the Thomas Cup. India is in first place in Group C after defeating Germany and Canada in Bangkok, Thailand.
Lakshya Sen, the bronze medallist at the World Championships, took a rest for the tie against Canada. HS Prannoy won his men’s singles match without breaking a sweat, Priyanshu Rajawat won his third men’s singles match in a tense battle against Canada’s Victor Lai.
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then won their doubles match against Jason Anthony Ho-Shue and Kevin Lee in just 29 minutes, before world number 23 H S Prannoy easily won his singles match against B R Sankeerth 21-15 21-12 to make it 3-0 and seal the tie for India. In a match that the Indians won 21-15 21-11 in 34 minutes, the second doubles combo of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala was likewise too strong for Dong Adam and Nyl Yakura.
In their final Group C match later this week, India will compete for the top berth against a strong Chinese Taipei team. India and Chinese Taipei have both qualified for the quarterfinals.
